Heads up on new Minnesota legislation effective August 1: (8 hours ago)

Bench & Bar Goes Digital

Subscribers to the MSBA’s Bench & Bar of Minnesota are receiving e-mails today announcing the beginning of the new digital era of the magazine. Starting with the March 2010 issue, MSBA members and Bench & Bar subscribers will receive a monthly e-mail directing them to the availability of an online digital edition of the magazine. The new digital edition ontains all of the content of the print edition but adds enhanced navigation, hyperlinks, and social media sharing functions.  It also allows users to embed magazine content on a website or send special “Look Inside” features to non-subscribers (see below). It does not replace the print edition but instead provides added benefits to those who are digitally inclined.

This month’s issue contains articles on domestic violence at work, recovery of in-house legal fees, and finding meaning as a lawyer. It also contains the regular monthly content of the magazine, including the popular Tips & Traps department (tips this month on medical privacy and on mechanic’s liens) and Robert Ambrogi’s Legal Online (who reviews WestlawNext). As the publication lands in your inbox and you have a chance to review it, let us know your thoughts and we’ll pass them on to Jud Haverkamp, the magazine’s editor.

    Greg:

    1) There is no plan as of now (at least) to do the digital version in lieu of the print edition, is there?

    2) Is the digital version still in a monthly periodical mode, or is it going to be updated in real-time (ala the ABA Journal’s new site)?

      Michael–

      1. No, there is no plan to replace the print edition with the digital edition.
      2. Yes, the digital version is in ‘monthly mode’ and replicates the print version, with added functionality (though, to be accurate, we actually only print 11 issues each year, with a combined May/June issue).

Other than working to redesign the current web interface for Bench & Bar, we don’t currently have active plans to add “breaking news” or other content other than what appears each month in the magazine or what is updated each week in our classifieds section.

      Thanks for the questions.

      Greg
