Practice Blawg: Maybe It’s Time for Law on a Stick (2 days ago)

Top 25 Minnesota Blawgs?

If you haven’t already heard, the 2009 ABA Journal Blawg 100 is out, listing the Journal staff’s opinions on the top 100 legal blogs in the country. Props to local blog Lawyerist for breaking into the top 100 for the first time, in the “Careers” category.  While fairly new, we also thought DuetsBlog deserved a mention, as it churns out some great, informative and entertaining posts about IP issues.

Alas, though, we were left out again. It’s actually facetious to think we’d make it, not only because in the blogosphere we are new, but also because it’s unlikely we’ll ever make the Journal’s Blawg 100. Why? For the same reason many Minnesota-based bloggers likely won’t make the grade: they are, in the ever-increasing rarified air of national bloggers, navel gazers. That is, they look inward to Minnesota and to issues affecting a Minnesota practice. And that’s a good thing.

blog-featured-smallBut what if we launched the MinneBlawg 25, the top 25 legal blogs with a Minnesota base and focus? Who would make it? Probably MinnLawyer Blog for its steady stream of legal breaking news, all with a Minnesota bent. Or Minnesota Litigator, with its regular spirited commentary, including case documents, on the latest in Minnesota civil litigation (including a recent post that informed readers how Tom Petters’s defense team was being paid).

Let us know who should make the grade, even if it’s yourself. At the least, we’ll add them to a blogroll on this site or to our growing collection of blogs on practicelaw. Or, perhaps with more ambition and some collective effort, we’ll be announcing the first annual MinneBlawg 25 next year. We’ll see.

Gregory Luce - Greg is the Practice Development Director at the Minnesota State Bar Association, where he oversees development of the association's various member-related online services, including practicelaw, mnfindalawyer, Fastcase, mypractice, and mndocs. A 1993 graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Law, he has been an attorney in private practice, a solo practitioner, and a staff attorney for Legal Aid. From 1999 to 2005, he was the Executive Director of Project 504, a tenant advocacy organization. He lives in South Minneapolis with his wife and two boys.

I would like to nominate my blog, ONSecurities.com, which I started in July 2009. The Blog covers securities, governance and compensation issues facing public companies in one or two posts every week. A major feature of the Blog is the ON Securities Cheat Sheet, available on the home under “Resources.” The Cheat Sheet briefly summarizes the pending legislation and proposed SEC rules that are important in the current atmosphere of compensation and governance reform. The Blog handles these issues in a conversational and sometimes humorous way and has received many positive comments from its more than 130 subscribers.

In an article in the StarTribune on August 9, 2009, Neil St. Anthony wrote: “Marty Rosenbaum, a veteran securities lawyer at Maslon Edelman Borman & Brand, is the ‘editor and principal blogger’ of ONsecurities.com (http://www.onsecurities.com), a blog that will provide regular updates about corporate and securities law as well as executive compensation topics for public companies, their advisers … and detractors. . . . Rosenbaum, an Iowa boy who attended Yale Law School, is a pointed writer who doesn't take himself too seriously. Recent headlines: ‘Say-on-Pay Bill Passes the House; Cheat Sheet Updated!’ and ‘Don't Get Caught Cheating.’ http://www.startribune.com/business/52695922.ht...

As the author of the Minnesota Litigator blog, I'd like to thank Practiceblawg very much for the recognition and will use this forum to underscore to Minnesota lawyers that I welcome any tips (even incidentally self-promoting news!) or developments in Minnesota civil litigation. I have gotten several tips, comments, and kudos over the months and this has been helpful as I am a one-person publication.

    Thanks again
