Creating Rules in Outlook

E-mail dogs me, and I suspect it dogs many attorneys. For me, it means an unorganized e-mail inbox that often piles up into an unmanageable level, despite getting near daily warnings from our IT folks that my inbox is over its allowed size.  Though I have read about and have pledged to become one of the Inbox Zero adherents, it just doesn’t appear to be within my skill sets. I just don’t think my current 3,209 e-mails in the inbox qualifies as inbox zero. But, with the right tools and motivation, including using rules in Outlook, I may have some hope, and you could too (plus we’ll post later about archiving Outlook e-mails by printing them to PDF).

As you will see from the video, creating rules in Outlook is extremely easy, often as easy as right-clicking on an e-mail and then telling Outlook what to do with similar e-mails in the future. Feel free to post questions after watching the video, or post questions or comments on Off the Clock if you have other issues that you’d like addressed. Other online resources for learning how to create rules in Outlook are available from Microsoft and from e-How, as well as many other sources, including Merlin Mann’s series on moving toward the apparent holy grail of ‘inbox zero.’ Enjoy:
